Ford has apparently been sharing secrets. And now, after a 15-day trial, a judge and jury have ordered the Detroit automaker to pay $104.6 million in damages for “breaching a 2004 licensing contract and misappropriating trade secrets,” to an Austin, Texas-based software company, as reported Automotive News.

Back in the late 1990s, Ford entered into a contract with Versata, a software company that licensed its software to Ford for over 17 years. According to the company, its software allowed Ford’s engineers and marketing reps work together on things like vehicle design, internationally. The main feature of the software was the ability to have real-time, seamless updates.

The contract held Ford to paying yearly licensing fees in the millions. But according to Versata, Ford had allegedly copied Versata’s software and moved forward with ending its contract with the software company. That 2014 offer for licensing was $17 million annually.

Ford said in a statement, “While we respect the jury’s decision, we believe the facts and the law do not support this outcome. Ford will appeal the verdict.”

The jury-awarded Versata $104.6 million in damages included $82.2 million for breaching the contract, $59.9 million

Broderick Adé Hogue, a Chicago-based designer who worked with brands like Nike, Target and even Alaska Airlines, graduated from UNC Charlotte in 2012. On Oct. 29, 2021, Hogue died from traumatic brain and head injuries in an accident after being struck by a van while he was riding his bike.

Almost a year after Hogue’s death, a Sept. 1 art gallery reception was organized in Rowe Galleries by several College of Arts and Architecture (CoA+A) faculty members to pay tribute to the late alumnus. This was titled “Beauty in the Struggle: Celebrating the Life & Works of Broderick Adé Hogue” and was made to honor the late designer. Before the reception, a heartfelt short film, “Finding Go: The Legacy of Ade Hogue,” was shown. This film outlined his life, legacy and achievements. The Hogue family, Charlotte alumni, CoA+A faculty members and students were in attendance at the reception.

The gallery showed samples of Hogue’s lettering designs on tracing paper, multimedia works, his college sketchbook, a prototype of the plane that he designed for Alaska Airlines and his iconic jean jacket he wore that read, “We Gon’ Be Alright.” These are lyrics he referenced from Kendrick Lamar’s

Accompanied by Assistant Professor of Communication Design Shannon Zenner, five Elon University students attended what is billed as the “premier conference for the design community.”

Matt Newberry ’24, one of five Elon University students to attend the 2022 AIGA Design Conference Oct. 20-22 in Seattle, admits that it’s difficult to pinpoint just one highlight from the experience.

While attending the 2022 AIGA Design Conference, held Oct. 20-22 in Seattle, Assistant Professor Shannon Zenner and her students ran into a familiar face, Rachel Cifarelli ’21. Pictured (from left) are Zenner, Cifarelli, Olivia Parks ’23, Ayla Brongo ’25, Matt Newberry ’24 and Ashley Stanbro ’23.

There was meeting legendary graphic designers Paula Scher and April Greiman, as well as connecting with Elon alumna Rachel Cifarelli ’21, who was also in attendance. He recalled leaving the presentations hosted by Radek Sidun and Kelli Anderson “absolutely astounded.” Plus, it was his first west coast trip, made even better because he experienced it with fellow members of Live Oak Communications’ creative team. Oh, and he won the conference-wide raffle, too.

When pressed, the communication design and Spanish double major, settled on one lesson he will take with him: there is always something to learn.
