NSA Urges Organizations To Shift To Memory Safe Programming Languages

Posted on 17/01/2023

In a press release published earlier today, the National Security Agency (NSA) said it would be making a strategic shift to memory safe programming languages. The agency is advising organizations explore such changes themselves by utilizing languages such as C#, Go, Java, Ruby, or Swift. From the report: The “Software Memory Safety” Cybersecurity Information Sheet (PDF) highlights how malicious cyber actors can exploit poor memory management issues to access sensitive information, promulgate unauthorized code execution, and cause other negative impacts. “Memory management issues have been exploited for decades and are still entirely too common today,” said Neal Ziring, Cybersecurity Technical Director. “We have to consistently use memory safe languages and other protections when developing software to eliminate these weaknesses from malicious cyber actors.”

Microsoft and Google have each stated that software memory safety issues are behind around 70 percent of their vulnerabilities. Poor memory management can lead to technical issues as well, such as incorrect program results, degradation of the program’s performance over time, and program crashes. NSA recommends that organizations use memory safe languages when possible and bolster protection through code-hardening defenses such as compiler options, tool options, and operating system configurations. The full report is available here (PDF).

COP27’s big breakthrough | Energy News Network

Posted on 15/01/2023

👋 Hello and welcome to Energy News Weekly!

This year’s COP27 climate conference wrapped up this weekend with a surprisingly big concession from some of the world’s biggest emitters — but climate advocates say oil and gas interests still weakened their win.

When global climate negotiators gathered this month for COP27, vulnerable countries like Pakistan, which suffered incredible flooding earlier this year, came ready to fight for climate repairs.

They wanted the world’s biggest emitters to pay up for the loss and damages their fossil fuel emissions had caused for decades. After all, many countries that stand to lose the most from climate change also cannot afford to mitigate its damage, but are responsible for only a small piece of the emissions that worsened it.

But as is typical when global powers are asked to own up to their past (and ongoing) transgressions, the US and other top powers kept rejecting climate-vulnerable countries’ calls. A breakthrough only came when Scotland — last year’s climate conference host — more than tripled the loss and damage funding it pledged a year ago.

From there, the dam fell: Just a day before the conference’s scheduled end, the European Union announced it would

Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! 2nd Opening Song’s Sales Halted – News

Posted on 13/01/2023

The official website for virtual YouTubers Canoe announced on Sunday that the release of the opening theme song “Ichigo Ichie Celebration” (Once-in-a-Lifetime Celebration)” for the second season of the Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! television anime has been canceled due to “various reasons.” The original song by Canoe and Uzaki-chan (as voiced by her voice actress Naomi zora) and a version performed by virtual YouTuber singing unit MKLNtic were scheduled to debut on November 30. The second season’s ending theme song “Happy Life” by MKLNtic was originally set to debut alongside the opening theme as part of a bundled release, but it will now launch on its own on November 30.

Hidekazu Tanakawho was recently arrested for attempted forcible indecency, composed and arranged the theme song.

In related news, the Pokémon Journeys: The Series anime’s opening sequence for the theme song “1・2・3” has removed Tanaka’s music arrangement credit in recent episodes. In addition, voice actress and performer Momo Asakura‘s live “Piacere!” tour has removed her song “Day and night dream” (“Shiroku Jichūmu”), which Tanaka composed, from the concert setlists.

Police arrested 35-year-old game and anime composer Tanaka in Tokyo on October 24 on the charge of attempted

BofA’s Rick Sherlund predicts software comeback

BofA banker Rick Sherlund predicts tech is optimistic about a comeback after earnings season

Bank of America top banker Rick Sherlund sees a major market shift ahead.

According to Sherlund, optimism surrounding technology stocks will make a comeback this year — but the key is weathering upcoming earnings season first.

“What we need to do is de-risk 2023 numbers,” the firm’s vice chair of technology investment banking told CNBC’s “Fast Money” on Thursday. “When we go through the fourth quarter in earnings, I think companies will indicate a reduction in force. They’ll talk about cutting back on go-to-market spending… This is all encouraging.”

Sherlund’s expertise is software. He hits No. 1 on Institutional Investor’s all-star analyst list 17 times in a row when he was an analyst.

And, he’s known for leading Goldman Sachs’ technology research team through the 2000 dot-com bubble, a time he calls “breathtaking.” The latest market backdrop reminds him of prior downturns.

“2022 was a terrible year for these [software] stocks,” said Sherlund. “We’ve seen tremendous compression in valuation. The good news is that downturns are ultimately followed by upturns. So, we’ve just got a lot of near-term crosscurrents.”

His latest market forecast coincides with the tech-heavy Nasdaq‘s latest struggles. It fell 1.47% to 10,305.24 on Thursday, and it’s
