These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things, Gadgets, and Devices

Posted on 08/01/2023

Like most people these days, we use tons of tech devices. From smart speakers to laptops to smartphones, we use it all. Better yet, we’ve gotten or given a bunch of new tech over the holidays, too, and figured you might like to know what we actually use in our real lives. Here, then, are the tech gadgets, gear, and devices that we love the most.

Just when you think everyone ‘already has one,’ you discover you know someone who doesn’t. The recipient of this gift was genuinely surprised to receive it and later told us that he particularly enjoyed listening to podcasts late at night and retrieving the daily news from it before getting out of bed each morning. —SE Slack, Senior Strategy & Editorial Director

This little Chromebook was for my husband, who does normal, household tasks like paying bills online, shopping, watching YouTube, and general casual computing. He wanted something small and lightweight that he could carry around without fear of breaking it.

BofA’s Rick Sherlund predicts software comeback

BofA banker Rick Sherlund predicts tech is optimistic about a comeback after earnings season

Bank of America top banker Rick Sherlund sees a major market shift ahead.

According to Sherlund, optimism surrounding technology stocks will make a comeback this year — but the key is weathering upcoming earnings season first.

“What we need to do is de-risk 2023 numbers,” the firm’s vice chair of technology investment banking told CNBC’s “Fast Money” on Thursday. “When we go through the fourth quarter in earnings, I think companies will indicate a reduction in force. They’ll talk about cutting back on go-to-market spending… This is all encouraging.”

Sherlund’s expertise is software. He hits No. 1 on Institutional Investor’s all-star analyst list 17 times in a row when he was an analyst.

And, he’s known for leading Goldman Sachs’ technology research team through the 2000 dot-com bubble, a time he calls “breathtaking.” The latest market backdrop reminds him of prior downturns.

“2022 was a terrible year for these [software] stocks,” said Sherlund. “We’ve seen tremendous compression in valuation. The good news is that downturns are ultimately followed by upturns. So, we’ve just got a lot of near-term crosscurrents.”

His latest market forecast coincides with the tech-heavy Nasdaq‘s latest struggles. It fell 1.47% to 10,305.24 on Thursday, and it’s

One of the most popular gadgets at the show goes in your toilet

Posted on 08/01/2023

One of the most popular gadgets at CES 2023 isn’t a wild new TV or some slick electric car. It’s a small device that sits in your toilet and analyzes your urine to track your health.

Yes, the Withings U-Scan is a small puck that attaches to the inside of your toilet and scans your urine to determine things like women’s menstrual cycles or whether you’re getting enough protein or vegetables in your diet and sends the data to your Withings HealthMate app.

The U-Scan clips to the inside front of your toilet bowl to help catch your urine stream. It then pulls in the urine testing via the replaceable test cartridge. Each cartridge includes 100 tests, which Withings says will last about 3 months.

The company is offering 3 different cartridges for the U-Scan. The U-Scan Cycle measures biomarkers for the Luteinizing Hormone; specific gravity for water balance; and pH for protein-vegetable balance. The idea is to help women better track their cycle and understand their ovulation window without having to use any additional apps.

The U-Scan Nutri Balance measures biomarkers for specific gravity, protein-vegetable balance, ketones, and Vitamin C. Finally, the U-Scan for professionals is for, well, professionals

Pub chain Young’s is slammed for swapping traditional signs for ‘bland corporate graphic design’

Posted on 07/01/2023

A major pub chain has been criticized for replacing its traditional signs with ‘bland corporate graphic design’ that ‘leaves them resembling them assets in a branding exercise’.

Young’s, which operates nearly 220 pubs in London and the south of England, has swapped pictorial signs for illustrations based around the first letter of each pub’s name.

For example, the Rose and Crown in Wimbledon Village in south-west London, which previously bore an image of Henry Tudor – the victor of the Wars of the Roses – now has a design based around the letter R.

Similarly, the nearby Alexandra in Wimbledon town center has seen its sign switch from a painting of the Danish princess after which it was named to a white ‘A’ on a blue background.

The Rose and Crown in Wimbledon village, with its new sign on the left and the old one on the right. Dating back to the 17th century, the former coaching inn – positioned on the edge of Wimbledon Common – was first leased by Young’s in 1832. The Victorian poet Algernon Swinburne was one famous regular

The Lamb is a small Victorian pub in Bloomsbury has also been fitted with a new sign.
