These ingenious minimal McDonald’s billboards are driving Reddit wild

Posted on 08/11/2022

We’ve seen no shortage of creative billboard campaigns from McDonald’s in recent years, and they often serve to demonstrate how powerful brand recognition can be. With just a few words or even colours, an ad can clearly belong to one particular brand – and this might just be the most minimal offering we’ve seen.

These minimal billboards are a few years old, but they’ve recently resurfaced on Reddit – and users are loving the designs. The campaign asks viewers to ‘follow the arches’, with cropped details of the famous McDonald’s golden arches acting as direction signs pointing towards the nearest restaurant. Cossette design agency (opens in new tab) describes how the campaign chops up “the world’s most recognizable logo,” to prove that “the McDonald’s arches are so ingrained in the minds of consumers that even if you cut them into pieces, they’re still familiar.” By zooming in on aspects of the symbol, the agency created “universally understandable road signs”.

And Reddit users are marveling at just how recognizable they are. “McDonald’s are the kings of brand recognition. At that point, I’m pretty sure a full red billboard would still

How do you build a low-carbon website? Web designer Victor Hwang shares his wisdom

Posted on 08/11/2022

Victor first got into web design in a way many will relate to – designing Neopets guild layouts and forum signatures on a pirated copy of Photoshop, for example. But aside from this, with his mum working as a taxi driver, Victor explains that art and design weren’t directly on his radar growing up. It was a few great art teachers – who let him tinker away on computers during art lessons – that helped his passion grow. One in particular, who had previously taught at Kingston, nudged him towards a graphic design degree at the institution. Since graduating, Victor has worked as a designer for the BBC and Parliament. Recently, however, Victor quit his job to focus on making websites for projects more aligned with his personal interests.

In realizing the Mater website, one of the elements both Victor and Maddie are most proud of is the top section of each contribution. “It was offered a space to play with imagery, transforming it in some way to develop a low-carbon common expression,” Victor explains. The first interaction of this practice is visible on the Chapter One page. Here, each contribution is listed and the name of the author is

Turns out every Vauxhall car hides a brilliant design secret

Posted on 08/11/2022

When it comes to beautifully designed cars, Vauxhall probably isn’t the first brand to spring to mind. Unlike the Rolls-Royces of the world, the sister brand of Opel is best known for its practical, budget-friendly vehicles including the famous Corsa. But it turns out the brand’s designs are slightly more interesting than we thought.

If you own a Vauxhall, you may (or, more likely, may not) have noticed that there’s a shark hiding inside it. Yes, you read that right – every Vauxhall since 2004 has featured a secret shark, and people are still only just discovering them. (Looking for design inspiration? The ultimate real life Easter egg has been doing the rounds on social media for a while now, and every time, the comments are filled with Vauxhall owners who had no idea the shark was hiding inside their car. And there’s no shortage of frustrated drivers who can’t find theirs. “Looked all over in my 2011 Insignia, cant find no shark anywhere,” one TikToker comments, while another adds, “Great, it’s half-12 at night and now

Genie’s lamp that makes a splash

Nosebuddy, £17.99, mad-hq.com

This genie’s lamp-like device is a neti pot, used to flush out the sinuses and ease congestion. You fill it with sterile, salt water and, with a tilted head, you pour the water into one nostril — by tilting your head sideways, the water drains out the other nostril, bringing mucus that may have clogged the sinuses with it.

‘Neti pots can be helpful after a cold, during hay fever or to help sinus issues where a build-up of mucus in the nose can cause discomfort,’ says Professor Paul Chatrath, a consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon at Spire Hartswood Hospital in Essex.

‘It flushes out congestion but also cleans the tiny hair cells in the nose, helping them start working effectively again.’

And it might reduce hospitalization from Covid. A study published in August by the University of Georgia, US, looked at twice-daily nasal irrigation in 79 people with Covid and found it led to eight times fewer hospitalisations than the national average.

‘Nasal irrigation is effective, but you must use distilled or cooled boiled water to reduce the risk of contamination,’ says Professor Chatrath.
